Design Sprint for transitioning into residential care

Camanio AB is known for its innovative solutions in ordinary living care, aimed to expand its expertise into residential care. A sector encompassing various forms of assisted living or residential care facilities. To approach this significant shift effectively, we initiated the project with a design sprint, followed by a comprehensive pre-study. The design sprint resulted in a set of viable prototypes tailored for residential care. These solutions reflected a deep understanding of the unique needs in assisted living environments, balancing Camanio's technological prowess with the human aspect of elder care. We received good feedback from the users and some interesting information for us to take with us before we jump to the next phase of the study.

The insights and prototypes from the sprint will guide the next phase of development and a direction for the next steps of the pre-study. This involves more detailed user testing, iterations based on feedback and finally the integration of these solutions into Camanio’s existing product line. Ensuring a seamless transition into residential care. To expand Camanio's expertise from ordinary living into residential care, encompassing various forms of assisted living. The project's aim was to identify if Camanio's existing mobile application could be adapted for 'särskilt boende' or if a new solution was needed, considering the distinct requirements of this sector.

As the leader and design expert, I facilitated a 4-day design sprint, an efficient adaptation from the traditional 5-day model. This structure allowed for quicker decision-making and more extensive user testing. Our diverse sprint team consisted of experts from tech, business, marketing, customer service, and design.

Design Sprint Process

Day 1 – Understanding, defining & sketching
  • We began with an in-depth exploration of residential care, contrasting it with ordinary living.
  • The team defined long-term goals, identified risks, and created a user journey map with a focus on key problem areas.
  • In our adapted approach to the design sprint, we diverged from traditional methods by starting with solution sketching on day one. This phase included lighting demos and the 'Crazy 8' exercise, leading to the finalization of our sketches. This early focus on tangible solutions set a dynamic tone for the rest of the sprint.

Day 2 – Ideation and decision making
  • The day was dedicated to idea generation, with methods like art museum, heat map and speed critique.
  • The decision-making process include straw poll and super decision to select the most promising ideas.
Day 3 – Prototyping
  • Focused on developing a functional prototype, emphasizing key features over visual elements.
  • The prototype was designed to simplify alarm management and integrate technical alerts for caregivers in residential care.
Day 4 – Testing and feedback
  • Conducted user interviews with four customers, gathering valuable feedback on the prototype.
  • Feedback was gathered to understand the viability and impact of our solutions in real-world scenarios.

Outcome

The sprint led to the development of functional prototypes specifically tailored for the residential care environment. Feedback from users was positive, providing critical insights for further development. The findings from this sprint will inform the next phase of the project, focusing on detailed user testing and iterative design. This phase will solidify the integration of the new solutions into Camanio's product line, ensuring a seamless transition into residential care.
